 MORE CONSULTATIONS, NEW SERVICES

IBIZA, 24 September 2014

The Endocrinology and Nutrition Unit has been expanded to meet the growing demand for consultations in this area.

On 12 September, the Endocrinology and Nutrition Unit was expanded with the recruitment of an additional specialist. Endocrinologist Eladio Losada (Specialist in Endocrinology at the Hospital Vall d’Hebron (Barcelona) is now joined by Dr. Mariví Velasco Cano (Specialist in Endocrinology at the Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid).

As diseases such as diabetes become more prevalent in the population, the role of the endocrinologist and nutritionist is becoming increasingly important.

It is estimated that by 2020 more than one third of the world’s population will have diabetes, a disease that is directly caused by lifestyle, diet and being overweight.

This Unit treats diabetes, as well as other conditions such as:

  • Thyroid diseases: hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer…
  • Nutrition: Overweight, obesity, malnutrition, etc…
  • Other, less common, conditions such as hormonal disorders, growth or development problems, adrenal tumours, etc…
  • Gestational diabetes and hypothyroidism are becoming increasingly common during pregnancy.

In addition, our new rheumatology consultation service at the Policlínica has already been scheduled to start on 4 October.

Dr Jorge Juan González Martín ( Specialist in Rheumatology at the Fundación Jiménez Díaz, Madrid) will be in charge of the treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system (tendinitis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, spondylitis, gout, etc.), connective tissue and systemic diseases (lupus, scleroderma, Sjögren’s, uveitis, etc.) and bone metabolism (osteoporosis, Paget’s disease, etc.).

Musculoskeletal disorders are very common in the general population (an estimated 10 million people in Spain, or 22.6% of the population), making them one of the most common chronic diseases.

Prevention and early diagnosis are essential, so early assessment by a rheumatologist is essential for prompt and appropriate treatment.
